A Response to National Lampoon's Vacation

Ethan and I finally were close to the Grand Canyon.  Our days of travel had almost led up to this, like a culmination and I couldn't wait.  The music had shifted to reflect the eager anticipation of seeing this great monument.   Classic rock filled the car, Led Zeppelin, the Eagles, AC/DC.  How fitting.
On the way out of Utah, we decided to drive through Monument Valley.  Ever since I had seen Forrest Gump, I've wanted to drive through it.  The almost impossible rock structures and epic landscape make it unforgettable.  The Americanness almost oozed out from the sand.  We didn't say a word as we drove through it, we were in awe.
Anyways, we eventually made our way close to the Grand Canyon when we decided to stop for gas.  Just as I was pulling in, a beautiful red Ferrari pulled into the pump next to me.  A woman about our age got out and put her head down and started to pump gas.
"That's a beautiful car" Ethan said.
"Thank you, it's my friend's."  The woman replied.
      "Are you driving her cross-country?"
      "Yup."
"So are we. We're not driving that car. Obviously.  We're driving our car."  I could hardly contain my laughter as Ethan turned bright red.  Our tank was full and I took the pump out of the car.
"Have a nice day, stay safe out there."  I said and nodded to the woman.  She nodded back and we were off again on the road.
"You were so smooth Ethan, wow.  Great job! Totally didn't make her feel uncomfortable!"
      "Shut up."

The Grand Canyon.  It came almost out of nowhere.  It was simply the most beautiful thing I have ever seen, and something I will never forget.  We pulled up to the edge at one of the deserted parts, away from all the commercialization and got out.  I went to the edge and just looked out.  Words can't describe how you feel at a moment like that.   It is simply surreal.   We stood there, thinking, contemplating for almost an hour.  What else can you do at a place like that.  As the sun started to set and we got our obligatory National Geographic worthy pictures, we left and started driving northwest.  It was time to have some fun.  Las Vegas beckoned.
