Dear Bess,
I really enjoyed meeting you. I wanted you to know that because I don't think you were able to tell from our interaction. The truth is, I really didn't know how to take you - I didn't understand what you were saying about privilege and equality and America.
I'm an eighteen-year-old farmgirl from Nebraska. I haven't met a lot of people from all across America. Well, I hadn't before I went on this road trip. And before I met you. But you were talking about people who were privileged and not privileged and minorities and majorities and enlightened and unenlightened. Those were things I really hadn't thought about before. It is interesting to think that for someone else that lives in this country, life is completely different because of who they are. I mean, I knew that people were different but I didn't think that it had such a large effect on their lives. I don't know if everyone in this country has a fair chance. I would like to think that they do, but I now see the argument that they do not.
Thank you for talking to me, and being understanding about me not understanding. Like all the people that I've met on this trip, I learned something from you.
From,
Nancy
